Opportunity Snapshot

This position offers you the best of both worlds: you will join a company pursing an aggressive growth strategy but also enjoy the stability that comes from old-fashioned values and a 70-year tradition of quality and integrity. You'll expand your experience and provide input in a variety of accounting areas, working with and learning from a team with deep experience and a strong collaborative spirit. Over the past five years we have doubled sales to $500 million, and as you contribute to our goal of becoming a billion dollar company in the foreseeable future, you will be in a position to take advantage of the "upward draft" of opportunity created by that growth.

Your primary focus will be on assisting in the preparation of monthly financial statements and the year-end audit, including preparing and inputting journal entries, analyzing and reconciling general ledger accounts, and fixed asset accounting. To be a good fit for this opportunity you will have solid and broad experience in accounting, ideally including public accounting, and strong understanding of GAAP. We're looking for a team player with a can-do attitude who is willing, like the rest of us, to "wear a lot of hats" and pitch in during peak periods.

ACCO is one of the largest mechanical contractors in the United States and a leader in the development of the design/construct approach for HVAC, plumbing, process piping, control systems, engineering, construction, building automation, and service. Established in 1934, ACCO is an employee owned company with offices located up and down the West Coast.

What Else You'll Bring to the Table

In addition to the qualifications detailed above, you'll need:
  • A four-year degree in Accounting, Business, or other relevant discipline.
  • Experience in preparing monthly financial statements and account reconciliations.
  • Demonstrated strong follow-through on all projects and the ability to multi-task and bring projects to timely completion.
  • A detail orientation and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Excel and Windows.
  • The ability to work with people in Accounting as well as other departments to improve business processes.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
Preferred but not required:
  • CPA.
  • Big 4/audit experience.
  • Construction accounting experience.
  • Experience with Great Plains.

What's in It for You

Autonomy and flexibility -- we're looking for a professional with the seniority to step into a well-run function and keep it moving forward with minimal supervision. Assuming you are achieving your goals, we'll give you support when you need it and "elbow room" when you don't.

Broad exposure in a team environment -- at ACCO you won't be pigeonholed the way accountants often are in large corporations. Because we run lean, we all contribute in multiple areas and everyone is happy to help one another. You also will interact with Project Managers and others outside Accounting, giving you a relatively broad view of our business.

Stability and growth -- employee ownership means that our employees are stakeholders, creating a very stable and predictable corporate environment that our employees and customers can depend on over the long term. At the same time, we have aggressive plans for growth across the company, including the Finance and Accounting department.

Great work environment -- we have an unusually large number of employees, in Accounting and throughout ACCO, who have been with us 10, 15, 20 years or longer, and for good reason -- we are very successful and enjoy a friendly and supportive atmosphere. At the same time, this best-in-class environment is extremely entrepreneurial, placing creativity and self-motivation in high regard.

Excellent compensation -- in addition to a competitive salary and bonus incentive program, we offer comprehensive benefits. We have just implemented an employee stock ownership plan, expanding a package that also includes health, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance; flexible spending and dependant care account options; a 401(k) plan with corporate match; an educational reimbursement program; paid vacation and holidays; and more.

More About Your Role

If you're a good fit for this position, you already know most of what this job entails. However, to be sure we're providing a complete picture, here are some details.

Reporting to the General Accounting Supervisor, you will join a team that also includes a part-time Senior Accountant, Accounting Clerk, and Cash Receipts Clerk. The position you'll take over involves established and stable processes, although we are open to your ideas for improvements.

In a nutshell, your main activities will include monthly closing journal entries, organization and preparation of financial statements, fixed assets accounting, and account reconciliation. Typical activities will include:
  • Preparing monthly analysis of financial results.
  • Analyzing and reconciling general ledger accounts.
  • Maintaining the fixed asset module.
  • Preparing daily cash reports.
  • And more.
You also will support Project Managers and other department personnel with analysis of job costs and other information, and assist management in analyzing actual results, forecasting the future, and monitoring large projects actual to estimated results. In addition you'll provide external auditors with requested information regarding your areas.

Keys to Success

A lot of companies talk about teamwork, but in ACCO's Accounting and Finance Department it is essential to our success. For example, any one of us may respond to questions from Project Managers and department heads, and we'll make sure you know how to access data for any request -- whether it is related to your area or not. You also will need to be comfortable learning systems that may be new to you. We use an older, but very robust and useful, construction accounting system, and you also will pull data from Great Plains, used by our Service group.

If this sounds like the right mix of challenge and opportunity for you, and you meet the minimum qualifications, we want to hear from you!
